The governor of Maharashtra claimed the need for a second airport for Mumbai 30/07/2010
The governor of Maharashtra, K Sankaranarayanan, has returned to claim the construction of a second international airport near Mumbai, which would help relieve air traffic at the existing airport in the city.
Bidding for the project, the governor said that "Mumbai needs a new airport. We must take this matter with urgency.
The claim of a new airport, proposed for the area of Navi Mumbai was recently opposed by the Ministry of Environment headed by Jairam Ramesh.
From his speech, the Governor justified its position by stating that the fuel burned by aircraft flying over the sky of Bombay awaiting permission to land also causes environmental damage.
The governor, however, said there was an urgent need to balance the concerns of environmental conservation with development needs.
